Titan Comics: Dan, tell us a little bit about yourself, what have you worked on before?

Dan Slott: Great to be hear. Most people know me from my 10+ year run on Amazing Spider-Man, but I’ve worked on titles like She-Hulk, Mighty Avengers, Batman Adventures, and a shamelessly Doctor Who-like run of Silver Surfer. Right now I’m Marvel’s current writer for Fantastic Four.

Wow, you have been busy! How were you introduced to the real Doctor Who, was there a particular era or Doctor that enticed you to the Whoniverse?

I got to see Doctor Who whenever my family spent summers at my Grandma’s. It was showing on PBS in her area. I got to see a lot of Seasons 12, 13, and 14 with the Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane, Harry, and then Leela. In 1980, my family moved to London. I got to watch every single episode of The Leisure Hive series, the second they aired. And when I should’ve been doing my homework, I was reading all of the Target novelizations of all the Doctor Who adventures I’d missed all the way back to An Unearthly Child.

So it’s been a part of your life for a long time then. How did you feel when you found out you were going to be the writer for this special edition?

Ecstatic! Anyone who knows me knows that Doctor Who is my favorite TV show of all-time. For me, along with Spider-Man, Batman, and Indiana Jones, the Doctor is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction.

What were the main things you wanted to bring to the Whoniverse?

Honestly? Everything! I’m treating this like this is my one and only shot to write for the Doctor. Everything, including the kitchen sink, is going into this one! Time travel, space travel, monsters from both the new and classic eras, and all-new baddies as well! This special will really be a tribute to the RTD era, as we’ll see a lead feature with the Tenth Doctor and Martha, and a back-up tale with the Ninth Doctor and Rose.

How would you describe your writing style?

Geeky, silly, and with a healthy amount of schmaltz. Google it.

On your social media there are lots of pictures of you with many of the Doctors. How did you pull that off? Are there any Doctors you haven’t met yet?

It’s a sure fire way to get me to attend a comic con. Whenever I’m invited to a show I ask if there’ll be anyone from Doctor Who there and if so, can I please meet them? One of the nice surprises has been how lovely everyone is in person. All the actors, cast, and crew are just the nicest people and the best possible ambassadors for the show. For now, the only Doctors I haven’t been lucky enough to meet yet are Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, and Jo Martin. So fingers crossed!

Lastly, who or what is your favorite Doctor Who villain?

The BBC. Out of everyone the Doctor’s faced, they’re the only ones powerful enough to hold him in limbo for 7 years – and then 9 more! Not even Davros could pull that off! That said, thanks for bringing the Doctor back BBC! Love ya!
